You have a good understanding of the story to this point, Kaylyn. Mrs. S. SYNOPSIS 11/15 chp.11,12,&13- When Peter opened the lid to the casket, Annemarie and Ellen peered into it and found that it was filled with a bunch of blankets and old worn out jackets. Peter gave one to all of the people who have come to their home. Uncle Henrik was planning on taking them over the sea to Sweden on his fishing boat. When it was time to head out into the darkness for the boat, Peter took all the visitors except the Rosens (Ellen and her parents) and left. A little while later Annemarie, her mother, and the Rosens headed outside into the darkness also. They walked up to the beginning of the trail and they all said goodbye to Annemarie including Annemarie's mother. After they fled off into the silent darkness Annemarie raced back to the house and she was all alone because Kirstie was upstairs sleeping soundly. Annemarie goes into the living room and sits down in an old chair. She was thinking that her mother should be home in about an hour so she wouldn't have to worry as much. She started feeling tired again and she nodded her head and fell asleep. Then she was awakened by a hint of sunlight. She then looked at the clock and saw that it was around 4 o'clock. Had her mother come home only not wanting to wake Annemarie? Has she made it home safely? She started to feel very worried so she quietly went up the stairs and look into the room she and Ellen slept in. The bed was made. She then peered into the room her mother and Kirstie slept in. She saw Kirstie in the bed holding onto the cat that struggled free and ran to Annemarie. Annemarie's mother was not there. She exited the room and closed the door and went to Uncle Henrik's room. He had some clothes piled on his chair along with a pair of muddy shoes. She went to the window in her uncle's room hoping to see her mother come down the trail she had taken when she left. Annemarie saw a black figure in the night and it started to move. Only then did he realize it was her mother laying on the ground. Annemarie ran down the stairs almost tripping on the loose step and catching herself on the rail. She ran outside and ran straight to her mother. She tells her mother that she was so worried. Her mother then told her that on her way back she tripped and fell and broke her ankle. Annemarie takes her mother over to the steps and they both sit down. Annemarie looked at her mother's swollen, colorless ankle and notices something on the ground. She picks it up and shows it to her mother. Heer mother says that it was the papers that Peter handed to the old man. It was on the ground by the step because the old man tripped and fell when they were leaving the house to meet at the boat to Sweden. It must have fallen out of his pocket. Annemarie's mother told her to get a basket and to put the papers on the bottom of the basket and put bread, cheese, and an apple and if anyone asked she would have to say that she was bringing lunch to a fisherman.
SYNOPSIS 11/17 chp.14&15- Annemarie is running in the woods trying to get to her Uncle Henrik's boat to bring him the packet in the basket. She is starting to feel alone and starts thinking about a story about Little Red Riding-hood that she would tell Kirstie. She then started to say the story to herself. She remembered how Kirstie would interrupt her every minute to ask questions. A little while later she hears something in the bushes. At first she thinks it is a wolf because she was telling herself the story. But she was wrong. Three soldiers came out of the bushes. Two with dogs. Annemarie freezes and thinks what Kirstie would so if she was approached by soldiers. Kirstie would probably get mad. Annemarie's mother told her if this happened she should act like a idiot little girl bringing lunch to her uncle. The soldier without a dog approached her. He asked her where she was going and what was in the basket. The soldier opened her basket and took out the bread she had packed. He broke the bread in half and through the two halves to the dogs. Annemarie acted mad and she said her uncle would be very mad at her because he didn't get his bread. The soldier took the cheese and the apple and finally got to the napkin that was covering the packet. He took the napkin and found the packet, took the packet out, and opened it. Annemarie realized that he had just pulled out a handkerchief. At last the soldiers left and Annemarie pocked up the apple and the cheese. She ran as fast as she could until she saw her uncle on his boat.
SYNOPSIS 11/18 chp 16&17- It was morning and Blossom, Uncle Henrik's cow, was mooing because she hadn't been milked that morning. Annemarie got the milking pail and went out to the barn to milk the cow while her uncle was still at sea. Blossom didn't like it when Annemarie milked her. She was used to Uncle Henrik's way of doing it. When Uncle Henrik came home he asked if Annemarie wanted a milking lesson. She agreed and they went to the barn. She watched him milk the cow and she wasn't really paying attention. She asked Uncle Henrik a question that has been wondering in her head. Why was the handkerchief so important. Her uncle explained how brave she was and that he would only tell a little of what was going on. The handkerchief was so important because scientists worked night and day on making a handkerchief like that. This was not any ordinary handkerchief. The scent of it would attract a dogs nose and the dog would sniff it and loose its sense of smell. Uncle Henrik and other people would use it to keep the Jews hidden and safe. That's how the .Rosens made it to Sweden safely. Two years later the war finally ended. The town of Copenhagen was celebrating their freedom and there were no more soldiers. The only sad things about this was Peter died and Ellen and her family haven't come back. Annemarie's parents told her how Peter died. He died because the Nazis shot him. Then they told her how her sister died. She was also killed by the Nazis but ran over puposley by one of thier cars. THEME- The theme is friendship and bravery.
